Graduate Spotlight: Marcus Taylor at The Gibson

When Marcus Taylor enrolled at PBS in 2020, he had zero bar experience. He had been working in retail management and was looking for something different that would let him combine his love of hospitality with a more creative, fast-paced environment. Within a week of graduating, he had his first placement at a high-volume sports bar in Arlington.

That first job was not glamorous, but Marcus credits it with building the speed and stamina he needed. After eight months, he moved to a cocktail-focused restaurant in Dupont Circle, where he started developing original recipes and learning about spirits on a deeper level. His managers noticed his dedication and gave him increasing responsibility.

The turning point came when The Gibson - one of DC's most celebrated cocktail bars - posted an opening. Marcus applied with a portfolio of original cocktails and a strong recommendation from his previous employer. He was hired as a barback initially, moved to bartender within three months, and was promoted to head bartender two years later.

Marcus says the most valuable thing he took from PBS was not any single recipe but the discipline of practice. "They teach you to treat bartending like a craft," he told us. "That mindset is what separates people who last in this industry from people who burn out after a year."
