Mixology Classes in DC

Mixology Classes in DC

There is a real distinction between bartending and mixology, and both paths start with the same foundation. A bartender needs speed, consistency, and hospitality skills to run a busy bar. A mixologist layers on a deeper knowledge of ingredients, techniques, and flavor theory to create original cocktails. The craft cocktail scene in DC has been growing steadily, and venues are increasingly looking for people who can do both.

Ron, a former PBS instructor and graduate, is a great example of where the mixology path can lead. He became manager and bartender at Shaw's Tavern, where he combined speed and efficiency with craft mixology. Ron created a signature cocktail called "Fifties on Fifth" - the kind of original drink that builds a reputation and keeps guests coming back.

Frank followed a similar trajectory. He started behind a neighborhood bar after graduating from PBS, building his speed and learning how to manage a full house on a Friday night. From there he moved to Black Jacks on U Street, continuing to develop his craft cocktail skills. Over time, he landed a position at The Dabney in DC - one of the city's most respected restaurants. The foundation he built at PBS gave him the technical grounding to grow into that role.

Whether you see yourself pouring pints at a sports bar or developing seasonal menus at a cocktail-forward restaurant, the starting point is the same. You need to know your classics, your techniques, and your palate. PBS provides that base. Where you take it from there is up to you.
